A total of 120 dependents of Kenya Army servicemen and women have been commissioned to join the Defence Forces Technical College under the fourth cohort of a skills development partnership between The Family Group Foundation and the Military Wives Association of Kenya (MWAK).
The beneficiaries, aged between 18 and 25 years, will undergo a 12-week hands-on technical training programme conducted by the Nairobi Institute of Technology. The training will equip them with market-driven technical and vocational skills in plumbing, electrical installation, solar technologies, and information and communication technology (ICT). Upon completion, participants will receive certification from the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Curriculum Development, Assessment and Certification Council (CDACC).
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony held at Embakasi Garrison, Kenya Army Commander Lieutenant General David Ketter hailed the initiative as a transformative partnership that empowers military families while contributing to national development.
“This initiative represents a powerful partnership of profound value. It not only empowers military families but also strengthens communities by creating pathways for dependents of Kenya Defence Forces personnel to become innovators, job creators, and contributors to national development,” Lt. Gen. Ketter said.
The programme, launched in 2023, has so far benefited over 200 dependents of Kenya Defence Forces personnel, with a strong focus on enhancing employability and entrepreneurship among young adults from military families.
The Family Group Foundation Executive Director John Waimiri noted that the programme has recorded an impressive transition rate of over 80 percent into the job market.
“We are proud of the impact this programme continues to make. As we seek to expand our reach, we are delighted to continue working with our partners to provide young people with opportunities to access dignified and sustainable income,” Waimiri said.
The initiative is part of the Foundation’s shared values programmes under the Tufuzu Youth Entrepreneurship Development Project, which focuses on construction, entrepreneurship, development, and business management services. The project aims to empower young adults through technical training, access to labour markets, financing opportunities, and linkages to strategic partners.
